Adani Group to Develop India’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Project
Project at Khavda to boost renewable energy capacity, aims for 50 GWh storage within five years
New Delhi, Nov 11 : Billionaire Gautam Adani is planning to develop India’s largest battery energy storage system in western India as part of the Adani Group’s push toward renewable energy expansion, according to people familiar with the matter.
The multi billion dollar project, expected to be completed by March 2026, will be located at Khavda in Gujarat, where the Adani Group is already building a massive renewable energy complex. Once operational, the installation will rank among the largest single location battery storage systems globally.
According to sources, the group aims to scale its battery storage capacity to 50 GWh within five years, strengthening its role in India’s clean energy transition.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly critical to modern power infrastructure, helping stabilize grids as they absorb growing amounts of intermittent solar and wind energy. India’s total power capacity is projected to touch about 800 megawatts this year, and expanding storage capability is seen as essential for meeting the national target of 500 gigawatts of clean power by 2030.
While the Adani Group has not yet issued an official statement, insiders confirmed that discussions are ongoing with several international technology partners to support the project’s implementation and scalability.
The initiative underscores Adani’s ambition to position India at the forefront of large-scale energy storage and accelerate its journey toward a more sustainable, resilient power ecosystem.
