₹2.47 Crore Flood Protection Project Launched Along Chenab River in Jammu

Minister Javed Rana lays foundation stone for erosion-control works at Fattu Kotli, directs timely completion ahead of monsoon season.

JAMMU, Jun 10: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday initiated a ₹2.47 crore riverbank protection project at Fattu Kotli on the outskirts of Jammu to safeguard vulnerable areas from erosion and flood related risks along the Chenab River.

The foundation stone for the restoration and protection works was laid by Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana. The project aims to reinforce the river’s left bank, improve structural stability and enhance protection for nearby settlements, agricultural land and public infrastructure.

Addressing officials and local residents, Rana said strengthening flood mitigation measures remains a key priority for the government, particularly in regions exposed to seasonal flooding and riverbank degradation.

He stressed the need for durable protective infrastructure to minimise damage caused by high river flows and ensure long-term safety for communities residing in vulnerable zones.

With the monsoon season approaching, the minister called for accelerated execution of ongoing protection works across the Union Territory. He instructed the concerned departments and implementing agencies to maintain strict quality standards and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.

Rana also assured that vulnerable stretches along major rivers and water bodies would receive focused attention under the government’s flood management strategy. He urged officials to remain vigilant and undertake preventive maintenance of existing embankments and protective structures in erosion-prone areas.

Earlier, the minister visited Bhagatpur village in Jammu district to assess damage to a section of the Tawi embankment and sought a comprehensive restoration plan from the concerned authorities.
