India, Feb 06 : India’s Ministry of Defence is expected to review the proposed 114 Rafale jets deal, estimated at ₹3.25 lakh crore, during a high-level meeting next week. The discussion comes ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s scheduled visit to New Delhi later this month.
According to defence ministry sources cited by news agency, the proposal is considered crucial for addressing the operational needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF) amid evolving regional security challenges. The Defence Procurement Board had granted initial approval to the plan last month, marking an early step in the acquisition process.
The purchase is intended to equip the IAF with advanced 4.5-generation multi role fighter aircraft while improving squadron strength. At present, the force operates about 30 squadrons, significantly below the sanctioned level of 42.
Officials indicate the project could also deliver a substantial economic boost, with nearly 80% of the aircraft expected to be manufactured in India through collaboration between Dassault Aviation and domestic private sector companies. The proposed fleet is likely to include 88 single seat fighters and 26 twin-seat variants.
Upon completion, the addition would expand the IAF’s Rafale fleet to around 150 aircraft, while the Indian Navy is set to operate 26 carrier compatible versions of the fighter jet.
The potential deal gains added significance as Macron confirmed his visit to India for the Global AI summit the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 scheduled for February 19–20 in the national capital, an event announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the France AI Action Summit.
