NEW YORK, Oct 20: US industrial conglomerate 3M raised its full-year 2026 earnings forecast on Tuesday after reporting stronger than expected quarterly profits, supported by improved operating efficiency and increasing demand for products used in semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence data centres.
The company raised its adjusted earnings-per-share guidance to between $9.10 and $9.15, compared with its previous forecast of $8.80 to $8.95. The upgraded outlook reflects its latest financial performance, improved productivity and growing opportunities in technology-related markets.
Shares of 3M climbed nearly 5% following the announcement, as investors responded positively to the revised guidance and the company’s expanding relationship with Amazon.
The results highlight a strategic shift for the manufacturer, traditionally known for products such as Scotch tape, Post-it notes, adhesives and industrial materials. Demand linked to advanced computing infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important opportunity as technology companies invest heavily in expanding data-centre capacity.
3M reported third-quarter adjusted sales of approximately $6.6 billion, an increase of 4.2% from the previous year. Adjusted earnings reached $2.50 per share, up 12% year-on-year and above analysts’ average estimate of $2.38, according to LSEG data.
On a generally accepted accounting principles basis, quarterly sales rose 1% to approximately $6.6 billion, while earnings per share increased 70% to $2.63. The company also reported an adjusted operating margin of 26.2%, an improvement of 1.1 percentage points from a year earlier.
Organic sales growth stood at 3.3%, indicating that the company generated higher underlying revenue after accounting for certain adjustments. Its safety and industrial business was among the contributors to the performance, while sales linked to semiconductor equipment and data-centre infrastructure provided additional support.
Chief Executive Officer William Brown attributed the stronger outlook to productivity improvements, organisational changes and a pipeline of specialised technologies. Management expects these initiatives to support profitability and strengthen the company’s longer-term growth prospects.
The earnings improvement comes as 3M works to offset uneven demand across its traditional markets. Sales to some automotive and consumer electronics customers have remained subdued, reflecting cautious spending and pressure in parts of the manufacturing sector.
Against this backdrop, demand associated with AI infrastructure has become a more significant source of opportunity. Data centres require specialised electrical components, optical connectivity systems and materials capable of supporting high-speed data transmission and reliable operation.
3M has been developing expanded beam optics, or EBO, connectors that use optical technology to transmit data between components. These products are designed to support connectivity in demanding data-centre environments, where high computing workloads and increasing network requirements are driving demand for advanced infrastructure.
The company estimated that sales of EBO products could increase to between $80 million and $100 million in 2027, from approximately $40 million expected in 2026. Although the products remain a relatively small part of its overall business, their projected expansion illustrates the potential contribution of specialised technologies to future revenue.
A major development supporting this strategy is an expanded commercial relationship with Amazon, announced on October 19. The agreement is designed to support the deployment and expansion of 3M’s optical connectivity and other data-centre products.
Under the arrangement, Amazon received warrants allowing it to purchase up to approximately 3.16 million shares of 3M over seven years at an exercise price of $164.89 per share.
Most of the warrants are tied to purchases of qualifying products. Eighty-five per cent of the shares covered by the warrants will vest based on Amazon’s payments for optical connectivity and other data-centre products, with full vesting of that portion linked to cumulative payments reaching $6 billion. The remaining warrants are subject to specified milestones.
The structure connects the potential equity benefit to commercial activity rather than providing Amazon with an unconditional share allocation. It also gives 3M an incentive to expand its technology business and meet demand for products required by Amazon’s infrastructure operations.
For Amazon, the relationship provides a mechanism to support access to components used in its data-centre expansion. For 3M, it creates a longer-term commercial opportunity tied to a major technology company investing in cloud computing and AI services.
The agreement also demonstrates how established industrial suppliers are positioning themselves to benefit from the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Rather than competing directly with companies developing AI models, manufacturers can supply the physical equipment and materials needed to operate the systems.
Data centres require extensive electrical infrastructure, cooling systems, connectivity equipment and specialised components. As computing capacity expands, demand can increase for suppliers across several industrial categories, creating opportunities beyond the technology companies that own the facilities.
However, the financial benefits of these arrangements will depend on actual product purchases, production capacity and the pace at which customers expand their infrastructure. The agreement’s potential value should not be interpreted as guaranteed revenue, as the vesting conditions depend on specified commercial milestones.
3M is also investing in its technical capabilities through a collaboration with Genius Electronic Optical, a specialist in optical technology. The companies are working to advance the development and manufacturing of expanded beam optics solutions.
As part of the collaboration, 3M plans to acquire approximately 4.7% of Genius Electronic Optical’s common shares. The partnership is intended to combine 3M’s materials science, manufacturing scale and customer relationships with its partner’s precision optics expertise and production capabilities.
The move reflects the growing importance of manufacturing partnerships in markets where technical performance, product reliability and the ability to scale production are critical.
Despite the improved outlook, 3M continues to face risks from uneven demand in several established businesses. Weakness in automotive and consumer electronics markets could limit growth, while changes in industrial activity and customer spending could affect orders.
The company must also demonstrate that its investments in emerging technology can generate sustainable returns. Strong demand from major technology customers offers an opportunity, but dependence on a limited number of large infrastructure projects could expose suppliers to changes in capital spending.
Management’s earnings guidance incorporates expectations about operating performance and market conditions for the remainder of the year. The revised range suggests greater confidence in achieving the company’s financial targets, although actual results will depend on sales, costs and the execution of its operational plans.
For investors, the combination of stronger quarterly earnings and expanding technology-related business provides two important signals. The improvement in margins indicates that internal efficiency measures are supporting profitability, while the Amazon agreement offers a potential route into a growing segment of the industrial supply chain.
The wider question is whether these developments can help 3M sustain growth across economic cycles. Its traditional product portfolio serves a broad range of customers, but demand varies considerably between industrial, consumer and technology markets.
The company is therefore seeking to balance established businesses with specialised products that may benefit from long-term investment in digital infrastructure. Success will depend on translating technical capabilities and commercial agreements into consistent sales growth and stronger cash generation.
The latest earnings report places 3M among the industrial manufacturers seeking to benefit from the expansion of AI infrastructure without relying solely on software or semiconductor production. Its revised guidance and closer commercial ties with Amazon underline the potential value of supplying the physical components that support the digital economy.
