Massive blaze after collision near Medina leaves at least 42 pilgrims feared dead, Telangana, Indian missions activate emergency helplines

Saudi Arabia, Nov 17 : At least 42 Umrah pilgrims are feared dead after a bus travelling from Makkah to Madina collided with a diesel tanker near Medina early Friday, causing a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle.
Saudi media reports indicate that several of the victims were Indian nationals, including many from Hyderabad, Telangana.

The crash occurred around 1.30 am IST near Mufrihat. According to Khaleej Times, many passengers were asleep at the time of impact and became trapped as flames spread rapidly. Gulf News reported that 11 women and 10 children are believed to be among the dead, though authorities are still verifying numbers.

Telangana government activates emergency response

The Telangana government confirmed it is coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to gather accurate information.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials in New Delhi to stay in touch with embassy authorities and provide assistance to affected families.
A control room has been established at the state secretariat.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi stated that the bus was carrying 42 Umrah pilgrims when the fire broke out. He noted that nearly 16 pilgrims who died were linked to Hyderabad-based travel agencies Al-Meena Hajj and Umrah Travels.
Owaisi appealed to the Centre to repatriate the bodies swiftly and ensure medical care for survivors.

Indian missions set up 24×7 helplines

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah announced a 24×7 control room to support families of the victims.
“In view of the tragic bus accident near Madina involving Indian Umrah pilgrims, a 24×7 Control Room has been set up,” it posted on X.

External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar expressed grief over the tragedy and said Indian missions in Riyadh and Jeddah are providing all necessary assistance.

State and central agencies on high alert

Following the Chief Minister’s directions, Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao contacted Resident Commissioner Gaurav Uppal in New Delhi to verify details.
Authorities have also been instructed to remain in close contact with the Ministry of External Affairs and Saudi officials, with readiness to travel if required.
