5 August 2019: A Historic Turning Point for Jammu & Kashmir: Rajni Sethi

Jammu, 03 August 2025: 5th August 2019 will always be remembered as a historic and transformative day for Jammu and Kashmir. On this day, the Government of India took a bold and decisive step by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A, thereby integrating Jammu and Kashmir completely with the rest of the country. This move, led by the Modi Government, was not just about constitutional change; it was about justice, equality, and long-awaited development for the people of our Union Territory, stated Rajni Sethi, Spokesperson, J&K BJP.

Before 5 August 2019, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was far from normal. Shops, schools, and government offices would remain closed frequently due to bandh calls issued by separatist leaders or threats by terrorist groups. The fear psychosis created by these anti-national elements had crippled normal life and economic progress. Citizens were hostage to a system that denied them basic democratic rights and equal opportunities.

Article 370 and 35A, which were meant to be temporary provisions, had over time become tools of discrimination and separation. Under these articles, many fundamental rights that citizens in other parts of the country enjoyed were not applicable to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. People from outside the state could not settle, invest, or work freely here. Women who married outside the state lost their rights. Dalits and other marginalized communities were denied reservation benefits. Even basic rights like education, property ownership, and equal job opportunities were limited. It was a clear case of injustice perpetuated by previous governments who either lacked vision or the will to bring change.

After the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir has started walking on the path of equality, growth, and stability. Every citizen now has the same rights as citizens in the rest of India — be it in terms of voting, education, employment, or property ownership. Laws related to gender equality, child protection, minority welfare, and employment generation have been extended to the region. Young people are finally getting access to opportunities that were denied to them for decades.

However, not everyone has welcomed this change. Many political parties — both regional and national — have opposed this development. These parties, who once ruled the state, are now calling for protests, observing ‘Black Day’, and spreading negativity about the decision. From Kashmir to Jammu, and even at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, they are staging protests for vote bank politics. These same leaders must answer what they did during their long rule. What was the condition of education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, and law and order during their tenure? Did they really care about the common people or just used Jammu and Kashmir as their political playground?

The people of Jammu and Kashmir are now witnessing the benefits of the abrogation. Roads are being constructed in remote areas, schools and colleges are being upgraded, tourism is returning, investors are showing interest, and most importantly, peace is slowly but surely being restored. The fear of terrorists and stone pelters has reduced significantly. The dream of a Viksit Jammu and Kashmir and Naya Jammu and Kashmir is becoming a reality.

We must remember that progress is never easy. There will always be forces who try to stop development, who thrive in chaos, and who want to divide people for political gains. It is the duty of every responsible citizen to think wisely, understand the ground reality, and support the right vision for the future.

Today, Jammu and Kashmir stands at a crossroads — one path leads back to the old days of fear, division, and backwardness; the other leads to growth, peace, and prosperity. The choice is ours. Let us stand united and support the transformation that began on 5 August 2019. Let us build a future that is bright, equal, and inclusive for all.
