India : Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) will invest ₹4,081 crore to construct a ropeway between Sonprayag and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, marking the company’s first major ropeway venture.
The flagship Adani Group company has received the Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) to execute the project under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana. The development will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on a revenue-sharing basis, according to an official company statement.
The 12.9 km ropeway will significantly reduce the travel time for pilgrims. Currently, devotees undertake an arduous 8–9-hour trek, but with the new system, the journey will take only 36 minutes.
Once operational, the project will have the capacity to transport 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, catering to the nearly 20 lakh pilgrims who visit Kedarnath annually.
Adani Enterprises will handle the construction over six years and operate the ropeway for 29 years thereafter. The project is expected to not only enhance the pilgrimage experience but also generate employment, boost tourism, and strengthen Uttarakhand’s local economy.
