Aditi Rao Hydari Critiques Online Smear Campaigns and Paid Negativity in Film Industry

Actress highlights the rise of toxic digital chatter and shares how she stays grounded amid criticism

Mumbai, Mar 02 : Aditi Rao Hydari, with nearly two decades in the film industry, has opened up about the challenges of navigating a landscape increasingly influenced by “paid negativity” and agenda driven narratives. The actress, who made her debut in the 2006 Malayalam film Prajapathi, emphasized that celebrity smear campaigns are not a new phenomenon, but their impact has intensified with the rise of digital media.

Rising Online Toxicity
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Hydari reflected on how social media amplifies misinformation and harmful chatter. “Celebrity smear campaigns aren’t new. But I see it around me all the time,” she said. She added that online platforms, often assumed to be sources of factual information, are now flooded with unverified content and hidden agendas. “Add paid negativity to it, and it becomes toxic. Sometimes, too much information is a burden. The mystery surrounding actors has faded,” Hydari noted.

Staying Grounded Amid Criticism
Despite the constant scrutiny, Hydari maintains her composure, crediting her mother’s advice for helping her remain centered. “My mother always said when someone is mean, the issue lies within them. That thought keeps me centred,” she said, highlighting the importance of mental calm in a competitive industry.

Balancing Success and Struggle
Hydari’s career spans multiple film industries and web projects, including her recent acclaimed roles in Gandhi Talks and the 2024 series Heeramandi. She pointed out that commercial success does not automatically translate into continuous opportunities, particularly for actors without a film family legacy. “Talent exists beyond success and failure. But if you’re an outsider, success influences opportunities. Even after a hit, you wait for the right scripts,” she explained, underlining the delicate balance between recognition and sustained growth in cinema.
