BENGALURU, Sept 7: Researchers in India are exploring a novel approach to cancer detection that combines the extraordinary sense of smell of trained dogs with artificial intelligence, in a bid to develop faster and potentially more accessible screening methods.

The initiative is based on research suggesting that dogs can detect subtle chemical changes associated with diseases through biological samples. Scientists are now investigating whether these capabilities can be strengthened by AI-based analysis to identify patterns that may be difficult to detect through conventional screening methods.

The work is being pursued at a facility near Bengaluru, where trained dogs are being used in controlled experiments. Researchers are examining whether the animals can reliably distinguish samples associated with cancer from those that do not show signs of the disease.

AI Could Strengthen Detection Accuracy

Artificial intelligence could play a complementary role by analysing the data generated during testing and identifying recurring patterns. The combination could eventually help researchers develop technologies capable of screening large numbers of samples more efficiently.

Early detection remains a major challenge in cancer care, particularly when symptoms are overlooked or diagnostic services are not readily accessible. Identifying disease at an earlier stage can improve the chances of successful treatment for several types of cancer.

Researchers caution, however, that the approach remains experimental and requires extensive validation before it can be considered a replacement for established diagnostic methods.
