Gandhinagar, Mar 11: The Gujarat government informed the state assembly on Wednesday that it is developing a comprehensive data governance framework for AI-based systems to ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical use. Officials said the initiative will strengthen data security and privacy in government departments and provide clear guidelines for data collection, usage, sharing, and protection, safeguarding citizens’ information.
Replying to MLA Janak Talaviya, the government added that a separate framework is being prepared to address bias mitigation, accountability, and human oversight in AI systems. The aim is to make AI-based decision making transparent, understandable, and subject to human supervision.
The government has also organised AI training and workshops for officials and technical staff on ethical AI, data privacy, and cybersecurity to enhance responsible AI use. Guidance on intellectual property rights, including patents, copyrights, and trademarks, is being provided to encourage research and innovation in AI and deep tech sectors.
To promote AI-based projects, the state established the India AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) to support research, start-ups, and industry collaboration. The AI Centre of Excellence (AICoE) launched four AI innovation challenges covering 25 cases, 12 of which were contributed by Gujarat government departments.
Additionally, the existing IT/ITES Policy 2022-27 was amended to offer a 33% relaxation in eligibility criteria for AI start-ups. Workshops on AI and Generative AI have been conducted for over 750 government officials, with plans for more sessions in collaboration with SPIPA to further strengthen AI adoption and skills development.
This initiative underscores Gujarat’s focus on promoting responsible AI adoption, fostering innovation, and creating a robust ecosystem for AI research and governance.
