Air India Pilot Caught Tipsy on Duty at Vancouver Airport; Transport Canada Issues Warning

Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi delayed after cockpit crew member deemed unfit for duty regulatory authorities in Canada and India alerted.

New Delhi, Dec 03 : Transport Canada has issued a formal legal warning to Air India after one of its pilots was found unfit for duty during pre-flight checks at Vancouver International Airport, raising serious aviation safety concerns. The incident, reported by CBC, occurred on December 23, when the pilot was preparing to operate Air India’s scheduled flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi.

Following a report of concern involving a crew member, the Richmond RCMP intervened, arresting the pilot. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have withheld further details.

Transport Canada confirmed it has engaged both Air India and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure proper follow-up measures. While DGCA has regulatory oversight over the airline, Transport Canada emphasized its commitment to immediate action should any safety risks be identified.

Vancouver International Airport officials said the flight was delayed by several hours but eventually departed safely after alternate arrangements were made.

A Transport Canada spokesperson reminded that Canadian aviation regulations strictly prohibit pilots from performing duties within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under its influence. Airlines are also mandated not to assign crew members deemed unfit for duty. Non-compliance can result in severe consequences, including suspension of flight authorizations and judicial penalties.

Air India stated that the flight was delayed as a cockpit crew member was offloaded due to concerns raised by Canadian authorities. An alternate pilot was assigned, and the airline said it regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers. The pilot involved has been removed from flying duties pending the investigation, and any confirmed violations will lead to strict disciplinary action in accordance with company policy.

Transport Canada reaffirmed that aviation safety remains its highest priority and that it will continue monitoring compliance with all applicable regulations.
