New Delhi, July 08 : The Alluri Sitharama Raju Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh has reached a major milestone, with Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announcing on Tuesday that the project is fully complete and ready for launch following the grant of its aerodrome licence by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The minister made the announcement after inspecting the airport site in Vizianagaram district along with elected representatives, district authorities and officials of GMR Group. He said the issuance of the licence marks the successful completion of the final regulatory process and clears the way for the airport’s inauguration and the start of passenger flight operations.
According to Ram Mohan Naidu, the aerodrome licence was granted after a month-long process of technical scrutiny and safety assessment to ensure the airport met all required operational standards. He noted that the verification covered key infrastructure, safety systems and readiness parameters needed before the facility could be approved for civil aviation use.
With the licensing process now complete, the focus has shifted to the formal inauguration of the airport. The minister said the Chief Minister’s Office has already been in touch with the Prime Minister’s Office to work out a suitable date for the opening ceremony. Once the airport is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, commercial services are expected to begin within a week, giving the region a major new aviation gateway.
Ram Mohan Naidu described the project as a landmark infrastructure achievement for Andhra Pradesh, noting that it had been completed six months ahead of its original target. The airport had initially been scheduled for completion by December 2026, but coordinated work between the Union government, the Andhra Pradesh government, GMR Group and the Airports Authority of India enabled the project to be finished earlier than planned.
He credited the accelerated progress to close cooperation between the Centre and the State, along with sustained efforts by the private developer and aviation authorities. The early completion, he said, reflects the emphasis being placed on modern transport infrastructure to support economic growth, regional development and improved connectivity across the country.
The minister also highlighted the larger significance of the Bhogapuram airport for north coastal Andhra Pradesh, calling it a major growth engine for the region. He said the facility has been planned not merely as a transport hub but as a strategic infrastructure asset capable of transforming trade, tourism, logistics and investment prospects in North Andhra.
Designed to handle up to 40 million passengers annually, the airport is expected to serve as a major aviation node for the state in the years ahead. The scale of the project indicates the long-term ambitions attached to it, with planners envisioning Bhogapuram as an important centre for both domestic and international air connectivity.
The terminal building has also been designed with a distinct regional identity. Inspired by the shape of a flying fish, the structure draws from the cultural and maritime character of north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The design seeks to combine functionality with symbolism, giving the airport an architectural profile that reflects the heritage of the region while presenting a modern gateway for travellers.
In addition to passenger infrastructure, the airport includes a cargo terminal aimed at boosting export activity from surrounding districts. With a handling capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes, the cargo facility is expected to provide crucial support to several sectors that are central to the region’s economy. These include aquaculture, pharmaceuticals, mango exports and other agricultural produce, all of which stand to benefit from faster and more efficient logistics.
The cargo component is especially significant because north Andhra has a strong base in perishable and export-oriented industries. Improved air cargo access could help producers reach domestic and overseas markets more quickly, reduce transit time and strengthen the competitiveness of local businesses. The airport is therefore expected to serve not only passengers but also farmers, exporters, processors and industrial units across the region.
Connectivity to the airport has also been identified as a priority area. Ram Mohan Naidu said multiple approach roads are being planned to ensure smooth access to the facility and to avoid congestion once operations begin. Among the major proposals is a six-lane coastal corridor linking RK Beach in Visakhapatnam with Bhogapuram, which would provide a faster and traffic-free route to the airport.
In total, seven dedicated approach roads are being planned as part of the wider connectivity blueprint. These road links are expected to improve movement between the airport and surrounding urban as well as industrial areas, helping integrate the facility with the broader transport network of the region. Efficient road access will be crucial if the airport is to fully realise its potential as a major passenger and cargo hub.
The minister also referred to plans for future mass transit integration. He said a proposal for a double-decker Metro link from Visakhapatnam to the airport is currently under consideration by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. If approved, the Metro link could significantly strengthen public transport access to Bhogapuram and connect the airport more seamlessly with the expanding Visakhapatnam metropolitan region.
Such multi-modal connectivity is likely to become increasingly important as the airport begins handling more passengers and cargo. Better integration with highways, city roads and public transport systems would not only enhance commuter convenience but also support the development of nearby commercial, hospitality and logistics infrastructure.
The Bhogapuram airport project has long been viewed as one of the most important aviation infrastructure developments in Andhra Pradesh. Its progress has been closely watched because of its expected role in easing pressure on existing facilities, creating new opportunities for tourism and trade, and positioning the north coastal belt as a stronger economic zone. With the aerodrome licence now in place, the project appears to have entered its final operational phase.
The development is also politically significant, as it reflects both the state’s push for large-scale infrastructure creation and the Centre’s focus on improving aviation access in emerging growth corridors. By linking a rapidly developing coastal region with major domestic and international destinations, the airport is expected to contribute to employment generation, industrial expansion and service-sector growth.
For Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts, the new airport could become a major catalyst for investment and urban expansion. It has the potential to improve access for business travellers, attract tourism, facilitate exports and support the emergence of logistics and warehousing clusters in the surrounding belt. In the long run, the airport may also reshape regional mobility patterns by reducing travel bottlenecks and opening up new economic possibilities.
As preparations now move towards the inauguration, attention will turn to the official launch date and the rollout of flight services. Once opened, the Alluri Sitharama Raju Bhogapuram International Airport is expected to become one of the most prominent transport and development assets in Andhra Pradesh, giving north coastal Andhra a major new gateway to the rest of India and the world.
