NEW DELHI, June 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS), a major digital initiative aimed at modernising border infrastructure and improving operational efficiency at India’s land ports.
The launch marks a significant step in the Centre’s broader vision of creating technology-driven border management systems capable of handling growing trade volumes, passenger movement and security challenges. Officials said the platform will provide an integrated digital framework for processing cargo, monitoring logistics and facilitating passenger movement through land ports across the country. The initiative is expected to bring land port operations on par with the digital systems already functioning at airports and seaports.
Addressing officials and stakeholders, Shah stressed the importance of technology in strengthening border governance. He said modern border infrastructure is critical not only for national security but also for boosting economic growth and enhancing connectivity with neighbouring countries.
The LPMS will enable end-to-end digital workflows, reducing paperwork and improving transparency in administrative procedures. Authorities believe the new system will help minimise delays, improve coordination among agencies and create a more efficient environment for cross-border trade.
India shares extensive land borders with several neighbouring countries, making effective management of border crossings a key national priority. The government has been investing heavily in smart surveillance systems, integrated check posts and digital infrastructure to strengthen border administration.
