Amit Shah Leads by Example, Self-Enlists for Census 2027; Calls It a ‘National Duty’

Digital first census exercise launches with self-enumeration option for citizens across India

New Delhi, Apr 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday marked the beginning of a historic shift in India’s census process by completing the country’s first ever self enumeration under Census 2027.

Sharing his participation on social media platform X, Shah appealed to citizens to actively support the nationwide exercise, describing it as a collective responsibility. He emphasized that accurate data collection is essential for strengthening governance and ensuring welfare schemes benefit every section of society.

The self-enumeration facility, introduced for the first time, allows individuals to submit their household details online through a dedicated portal during a 15-day window. This initiative is part of the initial phase of the census, known as the house listing process.

Officials confirmed that the census rollout has commenced in select states and Union Territories, including key areas of the national capital. The full exercise will be carried out in two stages housing listing followed by population enumeration.

Starting April 16, field enumerators will conduct door to door visits to document housing conditions and household details across the country. During these visits, citizens will be asked a set of structured questions covering amenities, ownership status, and basic demographic information.

In a significant technological upgrade, the entire process will be conducted digitally, with officials using a specially designed mobile application for real time data collection. The move is expected to improve efficiency, accuracy, and speed of the census operation.

Authorities believe that the updated approach will create a robust database to support policy planning and drive India’s development agenda forward.
