Amit Shah Reviews Security Situation in Jammu and Kashmir Amid Rising Terror Incidents

New Delhi, Feb 4: Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a high-level security review on Tuesday, assessing the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir following a series of recent terror incidents, sources revealed.

The meeting, held in New Delhi, saw top officials from the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and intelligence agencies briefing Shah on the security scenario in the Union Territory. They provided updates on ongoing counterterrorism operations and measures being taken to neutralize terror threats.

This crucial meeting came just a day after a terrorist attack in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, where ex-serviceman Manzoor Ahmad Wagay was killed, and his wife and niece were injured. The attack has once again underscored the persistent threat of terrorism in the region, prompting heightened security measures.

Attending the review meeting were Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, along with senior officials from the army, police, and intelligence agencies. The discussions primarily focused on recent terror activities, infiltration attempts, and the broader security strategy to ensure stability in the region.

Shah is also expected to hold another round of security discussions on Wednesday, this time with top officials from the paramilitary forces. The review aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance counterterrorism initiatives and strengthen internal security mechanisms.

During the last security review meeting on December 19, 2024, Shah had directed all security forces to intensify their coordinated efforts to root out terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir. The government has consistently maintained that terror-related incidents, infiltration, and youth recruitment into terrorist outfits have significantly declined. However, security forces have remained on high alert due to sporadic attacks and emerging threats.

In a recent crackdown, security forces launched a large-scale operation across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the higher-altitude regions and dense forest areas along the Line of Control (LoC). This operation aims to track down and eliminate terrorists responsible for multiple attacks across various districts last year.

Districts such as Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Jammu, and Rajouri have witnessed a notable increase in terror activities over the past few years. The ongoing counter-insurgency operations are focused on dismantling terror networks, preventing cross-border infiltration, and restoring long-term peace in the Union Territory.
