Anthony Geary, ‘General Hospital’ Star Who Played Luke Spencer, Dies

Soap opera legend remembered for iconic role in daytime television and record-breaking Emmy wins

India, Dec 16 : The world of daytime television is mourning the loss of Anthony Geary, the actor who made Luke Spencer one of the most unforgettable characters in TV history. Geary passed away on Sunday in Amsterdam at the age of 78, reportedly following complications related to a planned surgery. The official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Born in Utah, Geary’s passion for acting began in theatre, earning him a scholarship to the University of Utah. In the 1970s, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television, appearing in shows such as The Partridge Family, The Mod Squad, All in the Family, Bright Promise, and The Young and the Restless.

Geary’s defining role came in 1978 when General Hospital producer Gloria Monty cast him as Lucas Lorenzo “Luke” Spencer. Monty described Luke as an “antihero,” a man whose morally ambiguous actions were often driven by noble intentions.

The character’s romance with Genie Francis’ Laura became a cultural phenomenon. Their 1981 wedding episode drew an estimated 30 million viewers, cementing Luke and Laura as one of the most iconic couples in television history.

Geary stepped away from the show in 1983 but returned in 1991, portraying both Luke and his lookalike cousin, Bill Eckert. His final regular appearance aired on July 27, 2015. Over his career, Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor and received nine additional nominations.

Reacting to the news, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini said the entire cast and crew were heartbroken, praising Geary as a brilliant actor whose legacy would endure through future generations of performers.
