Srinagar, 24-12-2023 : The Kashmir Valley finds itself in the clutches of an intense cold wave as temperatures have sharply declined following a drop in the night temperature on Sunday. The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar reported that Srinagar registered a low of -2.1°C, a significant drop from the 1.2°C recorded the previous night.
This temperature was 0.1°C below the normal for this season in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. With the exception of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which experienced above-normal day temperatures on Saturday, other regions of the valley also reported temperatures above the seasonal norm. Pahalgam, a renowned tourist destination, emerged as the coldest place with a recorded temperature of -3.9°C on Sunday, marking a notable decrease from the 0.2°C recorded a day earlier. This temperature was 1.1°C above normal for the valley’s winter season. Gulmarg recorded a low of -3.5°C, registering a drop from the -1.5°C recorded the previous night, yet it remained 2.3°C above the normal for the famous ski resort in north Kashmir. Kupwara settled at -2.7°C on Sunday, in contrast to the 1.3°C recorded on Saturday, and it was 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir district, according to the Meteorological Office.
The forecast from the Meteorological Office indicates generally dry weather until December 26, with the potential for light snow over isolated higher reaches on December 27. From December 28 until the end of the month, the weather is expected to remain generally dry, with no significant weather activity anticipated until the conclusion of December.
