Asaram’s Interim Bail Extended by High Court Till May 25

Relief continues as court notes ongoing treatment; verdict on sentence suspension awaited

Jodhpur, April: The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday extended the interim bail of self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving a life sentence in a sexual assault case, until May 25, citing his medical condition.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Sangeeta Sharma granted the extension after reviewing a fresh application seeking continuation of relief. The court took into account submissions from the defence that the 86 year old is still undergoing treatment and has not yet fully recovered.
Medical Grounds Central to Bail Extension
During the proceedings, Asaram’s counsel argued that his health remains fragile, necessitating continued medical care outside prison. Acknowledging these concerns, the bench allowed him to remain on interim bail for further treatment.
The interim relief was initially granted on October 29, 2025, for a period of six months. With the earlier deadline set to expire on April 29, his legal team approached the court seeking an extension due to his deteriorating condition.
Legal Timeline and Previous Reliefs
This is not the first instance of temporary relief granted to Asaram. Following the Rajasthan High Court’s order in October 2025, the Gujarat High Court also provided similar relief in November 2025.
Earlier, on December 8, 2025, the Supreme Court of India had dismissed a plea seeking cancellation of his bail. At the same time, it directed the High Court to expedite the hearing of his pending appeal within three months.
More recently, an urgent plea filed on April 15, 2026, requesting immediate hearing for bail extension had been declined.
Appeal Verdict Awaited
Arguments regarding his appeal for suspension of sentence have already been completed. The prosecution, representing the victim’s side, concluded its submissions on April 20. The matter is now reserved for judgment, which is expected to determine the next course of legal action.
Until then, Asaram will continue to remain out on interim bail for medical treatment under the High Court’s latest directive.
