Ashwini Vaishnaw Highlights India’s Move from Service-Oriented IT to Product-Focused Tech Industry

Union Minister emphasizes semiconductor ecosystem growth and AI-driven technology innovation at Supercomputing India 2025

BENGALURU: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday spotlighted India’s evolving technology landscape, underlining the country’s shift from a predominantly service-based IT industry to a product-oriented tech ecosystem. Speaking virtually at the inaugural session of Supercomputing India 2025, the first conference dedicated to charting the future of High-Performance Computing (HPC) alongside AI and quantum technologies, Vaishnaw highlighted rapid progress in India’s semiconductor sector.

“Within just four years, India has attracted significant investments in semiconductor fabrication and assembly testing manufacturing units, with 10 units operational, including four in pilot production. Our design teams are now working on advanced 2-nanometer and 3-millimeter chips,” he said. “We aim to augment our services-based IT industry with a product-based technology sector in this new era of AI,” he added.

Vaishnaw also underscored India’s robust digital public infrastructure, pointing to the widespread adoption of UPI for digital payments and the nation’s position among the world’s largest 5G networks. “With such infrastructure, technology reaches every citizen across the country,” he said.

The five-day event is organised by leading HPC centres in India in collaboration with partners and supported by the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) at Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Hemant Darbari, NSM mission director, highlighted that NSM 2.0 aims to address advanced computing needs across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and climate research, reinforcing India’s push toward scientific self-reliance and technological excellence.
