The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly persuaded the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make a change in match officials for their upcoming Asia Cup clash against the United Arab Emirates. Sources suggest that former West Indies captain and senior ICC referee Richie Richardson is set to replace Andy Pycroft as the match referee.
The development follows PCB’s strong objections to Pycroft’s handling of affairs, particularly during the recent “no-handshake” controversy involving the Pakistan team after their match against India. The incident, which went viral on social media, raised questions over fairness and impartiality.
Although the ICC initially downplayed the matter and resisted PCB’s demand, the latest move appears to be a compromise aimed at maintaining harmony and avoiding further controversy. The PCB had even cancelled its scheduled pre-match press conference and reportedly warned of withdrawing from the UAE fixture if Pycroft continued.
Richardson, known for his balanced approach and extensive experience as an ICC match referee, is expected to oversee the Pakistan–UAE match. However, it remains unclear whether the change will apply only to this fixture or extend through the remainder of the tournament.
As Pakistan seek a crucial win to remain in contention for the Asia Cup, the ICC’s decision is seen as an effort to restore confidence and ensure smooth conduct of the game. Still, the aftereffects of the Pycroft episode are likely to linger over the tournament.
