GUWAHATI, Sept 18: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Thursday filed a police complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of circulating AI-generated videos aimed at creating communal tensions ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.
The FIR, registered at Dispur Police Station by APCC Media Department chairman Bedabrata Bora, names Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, state social media convener Shaktidhar Deka, and other digital wing officials. The complaint cites criminal conspiracy, incitement to communal disturbances, promoting enmity between groups, and violations of the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct.
According to the complaint, one of the videos, uploaded on September 15 and titled “Assam without BJP”, depicted a distorted scenario of the state under Congress rule, exaggerating the Muslim population to 90%, and showing meat shops, liquor outlets, and Islamic imagery. The clip carried captions urging voters to “choose your vote carefully.” The Congress claimed the video vilified Muslims and targeted party leaders including Rahul Gandhi and state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, with the intent of polarizing voters.
The party also highlighted previous instances of similar AI-generated content, including videos shared on September 12 and recent edits showing illegal immigrants allegedly occupying prominent locations such as Guwahati airport, the state stadium, and the historic Rangghar amphitheatre. These videos contained provocative captions warning of a “paijan” takeover.
The Congress urged the police to investigate the origin of the videos, seize devices used by the BJP’s social media teams, and instruct online platforms to remove the content under the IT Act, 2000. The party has also requested the Election Commission’s intervention over repeated Model Code of Conduct violations.
Reacting to the FIR, Gaurav Gogoi said, “The words, actions, and images produced by the BJP IT cell do not have the strength to scratch the surface of Assamese society. Assam deserves politics that uplifts people to new heights.”
The BTC elections are seen as politically significant for both the Bodoland Territorial Region and Assam’s wider electoral landscape, with parties reportedly using the polls to consolidate positions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP has not yet issued an official response to the FIR.
