Guwahati, August 8: The flood situation in Assam continued to remain severe on Friday, with the death toll climbing to 98 and more than 1.55 lakh people affected across 13 districts, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The latest fatality was reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district, taking the overall flood-related toll to 98.
Floodwaters continued to affect Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo.
Around 464 villages remained affected, with 1,55,849 people facing the impact of the flooding. Golaghat emerged as the worst-affected district, with 58,750 people affected. Sivasagar reported 48,286 affected residents, while Jorhat recorded 25,259.
The number of affected people has declined from the previous day’s figure. On Thursday, more than 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts were reported to be affected.
Relief operations continue across affected areas
Authorities have intensified relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit regions. A total of 55 relief camps are currently operational, providing shelter to more than 10,000 displaced people.
The administration has also established 18 relief distribution centres to facilitate the supply of essential items to affected communities.
Despite a gradual reduction in the number of affected people, water levels in some rivers remain a concern. The Dhansiri River was flowing above the danger mark at Golaghat town and Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
The Kushiyara River was also reported to be above the danger level in Sribhumi district.
Cropland and livestock suffer losses
The floods have caused significant damage to agricultural land, with 10,748.64 hectares of crop area remaining submerged.
The impact has also extended to livestock, with more than 47,000 animals affected by the flooding.
Several districts have reported damage to essential infrastructure, including roads, bridges and residential houses. Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage as relief operations remain underway.
With river levels still above danger marks at some locations, officials are maintaining close surveillance in vulnerable areas and continuing assistance to displaced residents.
