At G7 Summit, PM Modi to Champion Global South Priorities and Deepen Strategic Partnerships

Prime Minister to hold key bilateral talks with leaders of the US, France, Canada and others while highlighting energy security, trade routes and developing nations' concerns

India, June 14 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will carry the voice of developing nations to the upcoming G7 Summit, emphasizing that New Delhi’s participation reflects its growing influence in shaping global discussions on critical economic and geopolitical issues.

Ahead of his multi nation visit to France and Slovakia, Modi stated that India remains committed to representing the interests and aspirations of countries across the Global South. He noted that India’s invitation to the summit for the eighth consecutive time demonstrates the confidence major economies have in the country’s expanding international role.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 16-17, where he will engage with leaders of advanced economies and discuss pressing global challenges. On the sidelines of the summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and several other world leaders.

Before participating in the summit, Modi will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice to review progress made in the India-France strategic partnership. The two leaders are expected to assess ongoing cooperation in areas including defence, technology, clean energy, space, and economic development.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Macron’s visit to India earlier this year marked a significant milestone in bilateral ties, with both countries elevating their relationship to a Special Global Strategic Partnership. Discussions in France are expected to focus on advancing collaborative projects and identifying new opportunities for cooperation.

Following his engagements in France, Modi will travel to Slovakia, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the European nation since it gained independence in 1993. The visit is expected to strengthen political and economic ties between the two countries and open new avenues for cooperation in trade, innovation, and investment.

A key component of Modi’s agenda at the G7 Summit will be participation in a special meeting on West Asia hosted by France. Leaders from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt are also expected to attend the gathering, which will focus on regional stability and the wider implications of ongoing tensions.

India is likely to raise concerns about the economic impact of conflict in West Asia, particularly on developing economies that remain vulnerable to disruptions in energy supplies and trade. New Delhi has consistently advocated diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts while emphasizing the need to maintain stability in global markets.

The Prime Minister is also expected to underline the importance of safeguarding international shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas supplies passes. Any disruption in this strategic waterway could have serious consequences for energy-importing countries and global economic growth.

French officials have expressed interest in closer cooperation with India on maritime security initiatives aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels in the region. Such discussions are likely to feature prominently during Modi’s interactions with French leaders and other summit participants.

The G7 gathering comes at a time when the international community is grappling with multiple challenges, including geopolitical conflicts, supply chain disruptions, inflationary pressures, climate concerns, and questions surrounding energy security. India’s participation is expected to focus on promoting dialogue, strengthening economic resilience, and advancing inclusive growth.

As one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, India has increasingly positioned itself as a bridge between developed and developing nations. Through its engagement at the summit, New Delhi aims to ensure that the concerns of emerging economies receive adequate attention in global policymaking forums.

With a packed diplomatic schedule and several high-level meetings planned, Modi’s visit is expected to reinforce India’s strategic partnerships while showcasing its expanding role in addressing global challenges and advocating for a more balanced international order.
