Bangladesh, Dec 20 : The tragic death of 27 year old Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Valuka, Mymensingh, has led to arrests and renewed scrutiny over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) confirmed that seven individuals have been detained in connection with the incident.
Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, stated in a post on X that RAB-14 conducted operations across multiple locations to apprehend the suspects, identified as Md Limon Sarkar (19), Md Tarek Hossain, Md Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38), and Md Miraj Hossain Akon (46).
Writer and activist Taslima Nasreen criticized the incident, alleging that a workplace dispute escalated after a false blasphemy accusation against Dipu. She claimed that despite being in police custody and asserting his innocence, Dipu was returned to attackers who allegedly beat, hanged, and burned him. Nasreen highlighted the human toll, noting that Dipu was the sole provider for his disabled parents, wife, and child.
The incident has reignited concerns about mob violence, misuse of blasphemy claims, and the vulnerability of religious minorities in Bangladesh, prompting calls for stricter safeguards and accountability.
