DHAKA, Sept 7: Bangladesh is facing a rapid increase in dengue infections, putting additional pressure on hospitals as the country enters a period considered favourable for the spread of the mosquito borne disease.
More than 42,000 people have been hospitalised with dengue across the country this year, while at least 117 deaths have been recorded, according to health authorities. The outbreak has intensified sharply in September, with hospitals reporting a significant rise in new admissions.
Health officials recorded 1,558 new hospitalisations and four deaths in a 24-hour period, marking the highest daily increase reported so far this year. The growing patient numbers have created particular pressure on healthcare facilities in Dhaka, with hospitals also facing increasing demand in rural areas.
Medical experts have warned that dengue transmission could accelerate further during September as weather conditions remain favourable for Aedes mosquitoes, which spread the virus.
Hospitals face growing pressure
Dengue infections can range from mild fever and body aches to severe complications that may become life-threatening. Doctors have stressed the importance of monitoring patients closely, particularly after the initial fever subsides, when serious symptoms can emerge.
The country’s healthcare system is already dealing with additional pressures from a measles outbreak, adding to the burden on hospitals and medical staff.
Authorities have launched a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing mosquito breeding sites and increasing public awareness about dengue prevention. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also called for intensified efforts to tackle the outbreak.
Public health specialists have urged authorities to focus on targeted mosquito-control measures rather than relying primarily on fogging. Eliminating stagnant water where Aedes mosquitoes breed remains a key part of preventing further transmission.
With infections rising rapidly, health authorities are monitoring hospital capacity and warning communities to take preventive measures, particularly in areas reporting high numbers of cases.
The escalating outbreak highlights the continuing challenge posed by mosquito-borne diseases in densely populated areas and the need for sustained community-level prevention measures.
