DARWIN, Aug 14: Bangladesh produced a stunning opening-day performance in the first Test against Australia, dismissing the hosts for just 198 before making a confident start to their own innings in Darwin.
Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was the chief architect of Australia’s collapse, claiming a career-best six wickets for 55 runs. His incisive spell kept the Australian batting order under constant pressure and prevented the hosts from building a substantial first-innings total.
Steve Smith offered the strongest resistance for Australia, scoring a determined 71 from 109 deliveries. However, the former captain received little support as Bangladesh’s bowlers repeatedly broke through the home side’s batting lineup.
Australia’s total of 198 left Bangladesh with an opportunity to establish a commanding position. The visitors responded positively, reaching 96 for one by the close of play and trailing by only 102 runs with nine wickets still available.
Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque steadied the Bangladesh innings after Shadman Islam was dismissed for 20. Tanzid remained unbeaten on 35 while Mominul was not out on 32 at stumps.
The opening day’s proceedings marked a significant advantage for Bangladesh, who exploited the conditions effectively after Australia opted to bat first. Mitchell Starc claimed the only Bangladesh wicket, while also moved past Rangana Herath to become the most prolific left-arm wicket-taker in Test cricket.
Bangladesh will now look to build a substantial first innings lead and put further pressure on the Australian side as the Test progresses.
