Bank Unions Hold Strike in Jammu, Press for Five-Day Work Week

Nationwide bank unions say staffing shortages and long hours are hurting efficiency and employee well being.

Jammu, Jan 27: Banking services were disrupted in parts of Jammu on Tuesday as employees from various bank unions continued their strike, intensifying their long pending demand for the introduction of a five day work week in the banking sector.

The protest, now in its fourth day, is part of a nationwide agitation called by bank employees’ organisations. Union members gathered at key locations in Jammu, holding placards and raising slogans to press their demands.

Speaking at the protest, representatives of the All India Bank Officers Confederation said nearly eight lakh bank employees across the country are participating in the strike. Confederation representative Rajesh Khat said discussions had earlier been held with the Reserve Bank of India and the central government, during which assurances were given that a five-day working schedule would be implemented.

However, union leaders alleged that despite these assurances, no concrete action has been taken so far. They said bank employees continue to face staff shortages, increasing workloads and prolonged working hours, leading to high levels of stress.

According to the unions, adopting a five day work week is crucial for improving work life balance and enhancing overall efficiency in the banking system. They warned that the agitation would be escalated further if the government fails to address their demands.
