Bikaner Solar Power Project Boosts Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Push

Project developed at ₹5,492 crore to supply affordable green power to Rajasthan, J&K and Uttarakhand; supports India’s 500 GW renewable target

New Delhi, Dec 25 : Sh. Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, announced on Thursday that the company has successfully achieved the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the 1,000 MW Bikaner Solar Power Project, marking a significant milestone in strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity.

Congratulating the employees and stakeholders, Gupta said the achievement reflects SJVN’s technical excellence and the coordinated efforts of its workforce, contractors and partners. He noted that the project reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable and affordable power to the nation.

Located in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, the project is being implemented through SJVN’s wholly owned subsidiary, SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL). The solar plant is expected to generate 2,454.55 million units of electricity in its first year, with cumulative generation of around 56,838 million units over 25 years. Power from the project will be supplied to Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, with tariffs capped at ₹2.57 per unit, ensuring cost effective green energy for consumers.

Director (Personnel) Sh. Ajay Kumar Sharma highlighted that the project has been developed on 5,000 acres of outright purchased land near Village Banderwala, one of India’s highest solar irradiation zones. He said the commissioning significantly contributes to achieving the Government of India’s target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Director (Finance) Sh. Sipan Kumar Garg stated that the project has been developed at a cost of ₹5,492 crore under the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) mode, utilising domestically manufactured solar photovoltaic cells and modules in line with the Make in India initiative. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 27.85 lakh tonnes, providing substantial environmental benefits.

The foundation stone for the project was laid by President Droupadi Murmu on January 3, 2023, in Jaipur. The project has been developed under the CPSU Scheme Phase II, Tranche III of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), with DCR implementation aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous solar manufacturing ecosystem.
