Jammu, Nov 17: National Conference (NC) President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its “lack of concern” for the Jammu region, asserting that the BJP’s promises have largely remained unfulfilled, leaving the region struggling with poor infrastructure, high unemployment, and a series of unresolved local issues. Speaking at a function in Jammu to mark the birth anniversary of former Deputy Chief Minister, Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma, Farooq reiterated that under an Omar Abdullah-led government, Jammu would finally witness the comprehensive development it deserves.
Farooq, a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, pointed to the deteriorating state of the region’s infrastructure, including crumbling roads, erratic power supply, and the growing prevalence of potholes, which, he argued, reflect the BJP’s indifference. “The condition of roads, unreliable electricity, and the outsourcing of jobs are only a few signs of the BJP’s disregard for Jammu’s needs,” Farooq remarked. He went on to mention the increasing presence of large retail players and the impacts of unregulated mining activities as further evidence of the BJP’s neglect. “Promises made by the BJP, whether about new roads, hospitals, or employment opportunities, have remained nothing more than empty rhetoric,” he added, questioning the BJP’s accountability after nearly a decade in power.
Reaffirming his commitment to Jammu’s development, Farooq assured the gathering that, should his party return to power, the region would see balanced and inclusive growth under the leadership of Omar Abdullah. Farooq also spoke passionately about the cultural and social significance of the “Darbar Move” — a centuries-old tradition in which the state government alternated its seat of governance between Srinagar and Jammu twice a year. He expressed disappointment that the tradition was halted under the current Lieutenant Governor-led administration, emphasizing that the Darbar Move was more than just a governmental exercise. “It was a means of promoting unity, fostering trade, and encouraging community ties between Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse regions,” Farooq explained.
He argued that the BJP had discontinued the tradition as it conflicted with their political agenda. “The BJP sees this tradition as an obstacle to their plans, but I believe it is essential for healing the divisions between Jammu and Kashmir,” he stated, stressing that his party would work towards reviving the practice to ensure social cohesion and bridge regional divides. Farooq further emphasized that true development in the region can only be achieved through unity and a respect for its diverse cultures, languages, and challenges.
On a more symbolic note, Farooq promised that a statue of Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma, a stalwart of the Congress and a key political figure in the region, would soon be installed at a suitable location in Jammu, ensuring that his legacy and contributions are honored.
Karra Criticizes Two Power Centres in Jammu and Kashmir
At the same event, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President, Tariq Hameed Karra, also weighed in on the political landscape, criticizing the creation of two power centres within the Union Territory. He claimed that the dual power structure in Jammu and Kashmir — one led by the Lieutenant Governor and the other, at the political level — was detrimental to both national and regional interests. “The presence of two power centres undermines the interests of Jammu and Kashmir,” Karra remarked, urging a more unified approach to governance.
Karra also accused the BJP of practicing “jingoistic and divisive” politics that threatens the country’s unity. “The BJP’s agenda is weakening the very fabric of India, rather than the Congress,” he stated, referring to the ongoing attacks on his party’s ideology. He also stressed that the Congress party, despite electoral setbacks, would not be easily defeated. “The BJP cannot erase the philosophy and ideology of the Congress,” he asserted.
On the issue of Article 370, Karra reiterated his party’s firm stance against the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, calling it a politically motivated move. “Attempts to erode the special status of Jammu and Kashmir have been rejected by the people,” Karra said, asserting that the Congress will continue to stand by its position.
While responding to questions about the Lieutenant Governor’s recent security review meetings, Karra expressed concerns about the ambiguity of the situation. “When two leaders with different agendas are reviewing the same situation, it creates confusion and division,” he said. He called for a more integrated and holistic approach to security, noting that the current model could lead to more harm than good if not managed carefully.
A Unified Tribute to Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma
The function also saw several prominent leaders and activists from both the National Conference and Congress come together to pay tribute to Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma, who was known for his contributions to the region’s political landscape. Senior Congress leaders such as Raman Bhalla, Ch. Lal Singh, and Balwan Singh, along with NC leaders like Rattan Lal Gupta, expressed their admiration for Pt. Sharma’s life and legacy, emphasizing the need to continue his fight for the people’s rights and welfare.
As the event concluded, there was a palpable sense of unity among the political leaders, with all speakers reiterating the importance of standing up against forces that threaten the region’s integrity and harmony. The installation of a statue in Sharma’s honor is seen as a symbolic gesture aimed at reaffirming the commitment to his values of service, unity, and progress.
