Board Exam Reforms to Reduce Stress, Introduce Flexible Assessment Methods

Education authorities plan multiple exam opportunities and competency-based evaluation

Chandigarh: Education boards are considering major reforms in examination patterns to reduce student stress and shift focus toward conceptual understanding rather than rote learning.

Proposals include offering multiple attempts for board exams within a year, allowing students to improve scores without academic pressure. The evaluation system is also expected to incorporate competency-based questions that test analytical and problem solving skills.

Officials said the changes aim to create a more student-friendly system while maintaining academic standards. Continuous assessment methods, including internal evaluations and project work, are likely to gain more weightage.

Parents and educators have welcomed the move, noting that it could foster a healthier learning environment and reduce anxiety among students.

The reforms are expected to be implemented in phases after consultation with stakeholders and education boards nationwide.
