Bodo People’s Front Secures Landslide Win in Bodo Territorial Council Elections Under Hagrama Mohilary

Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front wins 28 of 40 seats; UPPL and BJP lag behind, Congress fails to secure any seat

The Hagrama Mohilary led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has achieved a resounding victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, securing 28 out of 40 council seats and positioning itself to form the next BTC administration.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, the Pramod Boro-led United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won seven seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed five. The Congress, on the other hand, failed to win a single seat in this election. The vote counting for the BTC polls was conducted on Friday, September 26, amid tight security arrangements.

TMC leader Sushmita Dev described the results as a clear mandate against the BJP-led Assam government, stating, “The results of the Bodoland Territorial Council elections signal a decisive mandate against the Assam government. The political churning in Assam has begun, challenging divisive politics. My gratitude to those who voted for the Trinamool Congress and the candidates who fought hard in our first attempt in the region.”

In the previous council, the UPPL and BJP had jointly formed the BTC administration. A senior BPF leader indicated that the oath-taking ceremony is expected to be held in Kokrajhar on October 3.

This election saw a total of 316 candidates contesting across the five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) — Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur. Kokrajhar alone had 12 constituencies, with 100 candidates competing, including 43 from Kokrajhar sub-division, 48 from Gossaigaon, and one from Parbatjhora.

The polling for the fifth general elections of the BTC took place on September 22. Of the 40 council constituencies, 30 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), five for non-STs, and the remaining five are unreserved. The BTC constituencies encompass over 26.58 lakh voters and are served by 3,279 polling stations.

BPF’s decisive win marks a major shift in the political landscape of Bodoland, reaffirming Hagrama Mohilary’s leadership and setting the stage for the next council administration.
