Cambodia and Thailand Declare Immediate Ceasefire After Weeks of Deadly Border Clashes

Phnom Penh/Bangkok, Dec 27: Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an “immediate ceasefire” along their shared border, effective from 12:00 noon local time on Saturday, following weeks of intense clashes that killed over 100 people and displaced more than half a million residents.

The announcement came after the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting held at the Prum-Ban Pak Kard International Point of Entry. In a joint statement, both nations emphasized the need to resolve disputes peacefully in an atmosphere of trust, good faith, fairness, and mutual respect, in line with the United Nations Charter, ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. The agreement is seen as paving the way for a new chapter of peace and cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides recalled the ASEAN Chair’s Statement from the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on December 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and reaffirmed their commitment to refrain from the threat or use of force, adhering to the July 28 ceasefire arrangement and other bilateral agreements.

The ceasefire agreement marks a critical step in de-escalating one of Southeast Asia’s most tense border disputes in recent years.
