RAMBAN, Dec 26: A young prosecutor associated with the Central Bureau of Investigation succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS Soura, Srinagar, on Thursday morning, a day after sustaining critical injuries in a road accident near Banihal in Ramban district.
Officials said the accident occurred at around 3 pm on Wednesday near the railway crossing at Banihal. An Alto K-10 car bearing registration number JK-03N-4273, driven by Advocate Sheikh Adil Nabi of Bijbehara in Anantnag district, was struck by a Scorpio vehicle bearing registration number JK-01BB-2625. The impact of the collision left the Alto severely damaged and its driver critically injured.
Sheikh Adil Nabi was immediately rushed to the Sub-District Hospital Banihal, where he was provided preliminary medical aid. Given the seriousness of his condition, he was referred to Government Medical College Anantnag and later shifted to SKIMS Soura, Srinagar, for specialised treatment. Despite sustained efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
The deceased, around 35 years of age, had recently cleared the UPSC examination and was appointed as a Public Prosecutor with the CBI in Chandigarh. His sudden and untimely death has come as a major shock to the legal fraternity, colleagues and friends, many of whom described him as a promising legal professional with a bright future ahead.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Arun Gupta, said the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized and the driver of the Scorpio, identified as Mohammad Shafi of Nadirgund Peerbagh, Tehsil Chanpora, Srinagar, has been arrested. He said FIR No. 139/2025 has been registered at Police Station Banihal under Sections 281 and 125A of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is underway.
The tragic death has triggered an outpouring of grief across legal circles and the prosecutor’s native area. Fellow advocates and colleagues expressed deep sorrow, recalling his dedication, professional integrity and recent achievement of joining a premier investigative agency. Many termed the loss as irreparable, not only for his family but also for the justice delivery system that had just gained a committed young officer.
