CBSE Tightens Rules on Third Language Policy for Class 6 Schools

Board directs affiliated institutions to complete compliance under the National Curriculum Framework before May-end.

NEW DELHI, May 7: The Central Board of Secondary Education has intensified efforts to implement the third-language requirement for Class 6 students under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, asking all affiliated schools to complete the process before May 31.

The move comes after the board found that several institutions had either failed to update their language choices or submitted options that did not align with policy guidelines. Officials said the reform is aimed at strengthening multilingual learning and promoting Indian languages in schools across the country.

According to the latest advisory, schools must update the information on the OASIS portal and ensure students are offered language options consistent with the new curriculum structure. The board has also assured that relevant textbooks and learning materials will be made available before the new academic session begins.

Education experts believe the initiative could significantly improve linguistic diversity and regional language preservation. However, some private institutions have raised concerns regarding teacher availability, training and classroom infrastructure.

Parents and teachers have reacted with mixed opinions. While many welcomed the emphasis on Indian languages, others expressed concern over increased academic pressure on students.
