NEW DELHI, July 27: Security arrangements across Central Delhi and New Delhi will remain on high alert after the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) warned that it could resume protests if criminal cases registered against demonstrators are not withdrawn. Delhi Police has intensified surveillance and maintained a strong deployment of personnel around Jantar Mantar and other sensitive areas to ensure that law and order is not disrupted.
The warning comes days after the organisation ended its 36 day protest following multiple rounds of discussions with the Central Government. According to CJP leaders, one of the key assurances during the negotiations was that legal action initiated against protesters would be reviewed and withdrawn. The party now alleges that the commitment has not been honoured.
CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka, in a statement shared on social media platform X, accused authorities of violating the understanding reached during the negotiations. He claimed that several students had been detained in states including Bihar and West Bengal, while volunteers supporting the protest movement in Delhi and elsewhere were allegedly facing surveillance and harassment.
Ranka said the organisation expected all FIRs lodged against protesters to be withdrawn immediately and demanded the release of those arrested during the agitation. He also insisted that no additional criminal cases should be filed against protesters or organisers by Delhi Police, central investigative agencies or police forces in BJP-ruled states.
According to the CJP, if these assurances are not implemented, the party would have no option but to restart its protest campaign. The organisation has sought a written confirmation from the Government regarding the withdrawal of legal cases and said it expects the document to be shared within the timeline that was discussed during the talks.
Speaking at a press conference, Ranka said the issue of FIR withdrawal had been a major point of discussion during the third round of negotiations with government representatives before the protest at Jantar Mantar was called off.
He maintained that both sides had agreed that criminal cases filed against protesters and organisers across the country would be withdrawn and that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the movement. According to him, the understanding formed an essential part of the agreement that persuaded the protesters to end their demonstration.
The CJP leadership has now warned that if the promised written agreement is not delivered by Tuesday and those arrested are not released, the organisation will launch another round of protests.
Delhi Police, meanwhile, has adopted a cautious approach in view of the latest developments. Senior police officials said security personnel, including paramilitary forces, would continue to remain deployed around Jantar Mantar and other strategically important locations in Central Delhi.
Officials said the deployment is intended to maintain public order and ensure that any gathering remains peaceful. Police teams have also been instructed to monitor the situation continuously and respond quickly to any attempt to disturb normalcy.
Authorities noted that Jantar Mantar remains one of the capital’s designated locations for public demonstrations, making it a place where security arrangements are routinely strengthened whenever protest-related activity is anticipated.
Police have also increased surveillance in nearby areas and are closely monitoring developments following the CJP’s latest statement. Officials said preventive measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incidents while ensuring that essential services and public movement remain unaffected.
The renewed warning from the CJP has once again placed the spotlight on the agreement reached between protest leaders and the Centre. While the organisation insists that commitments regarding legal protection for protesters have not yet been fulfilled, security agencies continue to focus on preventing any escalation that could affect peace in the national capital.
With Tuesday’s deadline approaching, attention is now centred on whether the Government will issue the written assurance sought by the CJP or whether the organisation will proceed with its plan to resume demonstrations. Until then, Delhi Police has indicated that enhanced security measures will remain in place across key parts of the city.
