Centre Clears 2% DA Hike for Central Government Employees and Pensioners, Boosting Salaries and Benefits

Delayed announcement brings relief to employees, adjustment effective from start of the year

NEW DELHI, Apr 18: The Central Government has approved a 2 per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees and pensioners, with the revised rate coming into effect from January 1, 2026. The decision brings financial relief to lakhs of beneficiaries amid rising living costs.

Dearness Allowance, a key component of salaries and pensions, is revised twice annually—once for the January cycle and again for July. However, the latest revision was announced later than expected, leading to dissatisfaction among central government employees who had been awaiting clarity on the increment.

Traditionally, DA hike notifications are issued around major festive periods such as Holi or Diwali. This year’s delay sparked concerns among employee unions, who had been urging the government to expedite the decision.

Despite the delay, officials indicated that the revised allowance will be implemented retrospectively, ensuring that employees and pensioners receive arrears for the intervening months starting January.

The DA adjustment is based on inflation trends and is aimed at helping employees maintain their purchasing power. With the latest increase, the overall DA percentage rises further, offering a modest but significant boost to monthly earnings.

The move is expected to ease financial pressure on households and may also positively influence consumption patterns in the economy.
