New Delhi, February 13: In a significant security upgrade, the Central Government has granted Z-category security cover to Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, deploying Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos for his protection across India, sources confirmed.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) took this decision based on a recent threat analysis report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), which highlighted potential risks to the Dalai Lama’s safety. Previously, his security was managed by the Himachal Pradesh Police and other agencies. However, given evolving geopolitical sensitivities and heightened intelligence concerns, the government has now entrusted the CRPF with its security, ensuring a more structured and specialized protection framework.
As one of the most revered spiritual figures globally, the Dalai Lama holds immense significance in Tibetan Buddhism and has been residing in Dharamsala, India, since 1959, following his exile from Tibet after China’s occupation. His influence and advocacy for Tibetan autonomy have long been a point of contention in Sino-Indian relations, with Beijing consistently opposing his global engagements.
Under the Z-category security protocol, the Dalai Lama will now be guarded by a dedicated team of CRPF commandos, including close protection officers and an armed escort, ensuring his safety during domestic travels and public appearances. This move underscores the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Tibetan leader, particularly amid growing concerns over potential threats.
