Real Madrid win 6-1 as Sporting edge PSG 2-1 Ajax and Olympiacos also record key victories

India, Jan 21 : Kylian Mbappe scored twice against former club Monaco as Real Madrid cruised to a dominant 6-1 home victory in the Champions League on Tuesday, strengthening their push for a top eight finish in the league phase.

Mbappe, who began his professional career at Monaco, opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a composed finish after being played through by Fede Valverde. He doubled Real’s advantage before halftime, sliding in at the far post to cap a blistering first half display.

Real Madrid extended their dominance after the break as Franco Mastantuono struck in the 51st minute, capitalising on defensive gaps from the visitors. Monaco’s woes deepened when Thilo Kehrer turned the ball into his own net, before Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham added further goals to complete the rout. Jordan Teze scored a late consolation for Monaco.

Elsewhere, Sporting Clube de Portugal produced one of the night’s biggest upsets by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at home to move up to sixth in the standings.

PSG controlled large periods of the match and had two goals disallowed before falling behind in the 74th minute when Luis Suarez finished calmly from close range. Substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia equalised five minutes later with a superb curling strike, but Suarez struck again late on, heading in a rebound to secure the win for Sporting.

In Amsterdam, Ajax clinched a dramatic late victory over winless Villarreal, with substitute Oliver Edvardsen scoring the decisive goal in the closing minutes.

After a goalless first half, Villarreal took the lead through Tani Oluwaseyi, but Ajax responded 12 minutes later when Oscar Gloukh converted a free-kick. With the match heading for a draw, Edvardsen latched onto a low cross and swept home to seal the points.

Meanwhile, Olympiacos registered their first win in 14 matches against German opposition with a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Piraeus.

The hosts struck early through Costinha inside two minutes before Mehdi Taremi doubled the lead just before halftime with a swift counterattack. Despite creating several chances, Leverkusen were repeatedly denied by Olympiacos goalkeeper Kostas Tzolakis.
