Chennai Sizzles: Meenambakkam Records 36.1°C Amid Rising Heat

Delayed sea breeze and dry winds push Meenambakkam to 36.1°C; hotter days ahead for suburbs

Chennai, Apr 03 : Chennai is witnessing a steady rise in summer temperatures, particularly in its suburban regions, where heat levels are becoming more intense. On Thursday, Meenambakkam recorded a high of 36.1°C, signaling the early surge of seasonal warmth.

Weather experts attribute the spike to prevailing land winds and a delay in the onset of easterly winds from the sea, which typically help regulate daytime temperatures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry weather conditions are expected to continue on Friday, with maximum temperatures likely hovering between 36°C and 37°C, while minimum temperatures may settle around 25°C to 26°C under partly cloudy skies.

In contrast, Nungambakkam registered 33.8°C, which is considered near normal for this time of year. Meteorologists explained that during summer, the timely arrival of sea breeze plays a crucial role in cooling coastal areas. A delay in these winds often results in higher temperatures inland, making suburban areas warmer compared to regions closer to the coast.

The IMD has also indicated that temperatures across Tamil Nadu are expected to remain above normal until April 6. Meanwhile, a trough extending from interior Tamil Nadu to the central Konkan region could bring light to moderate rainfall over parts of the Western Ghats and southern districts on April 3 and 4.

Weather observers have further cautioned that temperatures may rise sharply after April 4, with some suburban areas potentially crossing the 40°C mark if current conditions persist.
