BEIJING, Nov 4: China on Wednesday expressed its readiness to maintain cooperation with the United States following the Democratic Party’s gains in the midterm elections, stressing that bilateral relations should remain unaffected by domestic political developments in America.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described the midterm elections as an internal matter of the United States while responding to questions about Beijing’s assessment of the results.
The Democratic Party made significant gains, securing control of Congress and winning key gubernatorial contests, marking a notable shift in the American political landscape.
Mao said Beijing was prepared to work with Washington to implement the important understandings reached by the two countries’ leaders. She emphasised the need to strengthen communication, address disagreements appropriately and explore opportunities for cooperation.
She added that China remained committed to developing a constructive relationship with the United States based on mutual respect, fairness and reciprocity, with the objective of maintaining strategic stability.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held two high-level meetings this year as part of efforts to improve bilateral ties. Xi’s September 23-25 visit to the United States included a series of discussions with Trump and marked their second summit following the US President’s visit to Beijing in May.
Beijing described the two meetings as significant milestones in relations between the world’s two largest economies, reflecting efforts to establish a more stable framework for engagement.
Meanwhile, Mao confirmed that China was discussing arrangements with the United States and Russia for a possible trilateral meeting involving Xi, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
The summit is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen on November 18-19. Her remarks followed a Financial Times report suggesting that officials from the three countries were coordinating preparations for a possible meeting between their leaders.
The proposed gathering could provide an opportunity for discussions on major international issues and relations among the three powers.
