CJI Surya Kant Hails Mediation as Effective and Cost-Efficient Dispute Resolution Tool

Chief Justice highlights growing acceptance of mediation at Panaji ‘Mediation Awareness’ event

Panaji, Dec 26: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday emphasized that mediation is increasingly recognized as a successful, cost-effective, and mutually beneficial method for resolving disputes. Speaking at a symbolic walk for ‘Mediation Awareness’ near Kala Academy in Panaji, CJI Kant underscored that mediation offers a win-win solution for litigating parties.

“Mediation is being accepted as successful and cost effective. It is a win-win situation for both parties as it is a settlement,” he said. He added that mediators do not impose decisions; outcomes depend entirely on the parties’ wishes.

CJI Kant highlighted the Supreme Court’s ‘Mediation for Nation’ initiative, aimed at raising awareness among stakeholders, including the Bar and the Bench. He stressed that sensitizing people about mediation encourages its use as an effective dispute resolution tool.

He noted that courts, including high courts and district courts, are increasingly identifying cases suitable for mediation. The CJI further stated that mediation is an ongoing process applicable to both pre-litigation matters and pending cases, ensuring faster and amicable resolutions.

Later, he was scheduled to participate in the conference ‘Mediation: How Significant in the Present-Day Context’ organized by the India International University of Legal Education and Research at Sancoale village in South Goa.
