LOS ANGELES, Aug 11: The long awaited Clueless sequel series has received a major boost after being selected for a California film and television tax credit, bringing the project closer to production.
The series is among nine television projects awarded incentives under California’s expanded production programme. The Clueless project is being developed by CBS Studios for Paramount+, with an estimated tax credit of $16 million.
Alicia Silverstone is expected to return as Cher Horowitz, the character she portrayed in the popular 1995 film. Silverstone will also serve as an executive producer on the new project.
The revival has faced several setbacks since it was first announced. The project was initially developed for Peacock but was later dropped by the platform before being picked up by Paramount+ as a six-episode limited event series.
The new production is being positioned as a continuation of Cher’s story, with original producer Robert Lawrence attached. Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Jordan Weiss are among the writers and executive producers involved.
Production is currently expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, although the series does not yet have an official release date. Additional casting details are also yet to be announced.
The California incentive is expected to help keep the production in Los Angeles while supporting local cast, crew and other entertainment-sector workers. The latest development marks one of the clearest signs yet that Cher’s next chapter could finally reach the screen.
