GORAKHPUR, Aug 10: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign is a tribute to the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters and called upon citizens to display the national flag at their homes with pride and respect.
Addressing a Tiranga Yatra organised in Gorakhpur under the campaign, Adityanath said the tricolour symbolises the sacrifices made by revolutionaries and freedom fighters during the struggle for independence.
He described the national flag as an inspiration drawn from the “immortal saga” of those who fought for the country’s freedom.
Tricolour reflects freedom struggle
Adityanath recalled the evolution of the national flag during the freedom movement, noting that the Swadeshi movement of 1905 became an important expression of resistance against British rule. He also referred to the spinning wheel that was incorporated into the flag used by freedom fighters.
After Independence, the tricolour with the Ashoka Chakra was adopted as the national flag, representing India’s ideals and identity, he said.
The chief minister said citizens today have the freedom to display the national flag at their homes, describing it as a matter of pride.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with strengthening this right through amendments to the Flag Code in 2022.
According to Adityanath, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative reflects the idea that every citizen should experience pride in displaying the national flag as a symbol of India’s honour, dignity and glory.
UP targets five crore households
The campaign was launched in 2022 and continued in subsequent years, including 2023, 2024 and 2025. Adityanath said the initiative is reaching a larger scale this year.
Uttar Pradesh has set a target of hoisting the tricolour at five crore homes, he said.
Government and private institutions, industries and households across the state are expected to participate in the campaign.
The chief minister also highlighted the sacrifices made during the independence movement, saying India’s freedom was achieved through decades of struggle and the contributions of people from different parts of the country.
He recalled the roles played by figures including Mangal Pandey, Bandhu Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope and Dhan Singh Kotwal.
CM recalls Chauri Chaura, Kakori revolutionaries
Adityanath referred to the Chauri Chaura incident of 1922 and the Kakori train action of 1925 while stressing the importance of remembering revolutionary contributions.
He named revolutionaries such as Ram Prasad Bismil, Roshan Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Rajendra Nath Lahiri.
The chief minister said the revolutionaries involved in the Kakori action intended to use money seized from the British government for the freedom struggle. He criticised the historical description of the incident as the “Kakori train dacoity”, saying the term did not reflect the revolutionaries’ objective.
Adityanath said the Modi government uses the term “Kakori Train Action” to highlight its connection with the independence movement.
He also claimed that several revolutionaries did not receive adequate recognition in the years following Independence and said their contributions are now being acknowledged.
Appeal to protect dignity of national flag
Adityanath urged participants in the Tiranga Yatra to carry the national flag throughout the procession and take it home afterwards.
He appealed to citizens not to discard the tricolour and encouraged them to hoist it at their residences and participate in the ‘Selfie with Tiranga’ initiative.
The chief minister also called for respect towards the national flag, ‘Vande Mataram’ and the national anthem, saying national symbols should be treated with dignity by every citizen.
He noted that this year also marks the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ and urged people participating in the procession to raise slogans of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
Adityanath had also participated in a Tiranga Yatra in Lucknow on Sunday.
