Srinagar, Oct 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has identified land for new housing colonies and initiated multiple housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) to ease the rising problem of urban congestion, the Housing and Urban Development Department informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a starred question (No. 198) raised by senior NC MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar, the government said that new housing colonies for the economically weaker sections (EWS) are under development across several districts of the Union Territory.
According to the department, 760 flats for EWS beneficiaries are under construction at Bhalwal in Jammu, while another 304 flats are being built at Chakhar, Sundli in Udhampur.
The J&K Housing Board has also identified and received state land at 10 locations across the Union Territory for additional flatted accommodations under PMAY (U) 2.0. These housing colonies will cater to both the general public and low-income groups.
The government further informed that affordable rental housing units are being developed under the Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) vertical in Jammu City to provide shelter solutions for the urban poor and migrant workers.
Officials said these projects are part of the broader urban renewal strategy aimed at decongesting cities, improving living conditions, and ensuring inclusive housing access for all sections of society.
