Congress Alleges Modi Govt Sidestepping Palestinian Cause Ahead of Israel Visit

Congress Slams Centre Over Palestine Stand Ahead of PM’s Israel Visit

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday accused the Centre of turning its back on the Palestinian cause, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming Israel visit reflects a shift in India’s long-standing foreign policy position.

Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh claimed the government’s statements supporting Palestinian rights were “cynical and hypocritical,” asserting that New Delhi has effectively distanced itself from a cause it historically endorsed. He recalled that India was among the first nations to recognise Palestine in 1988.

Ramesh said violence in Gaza continues unabated and pointed to escalating tensions in the West Bank, drawing international criticism. He also flagged reports of potential military escalation involving Israel and the United States in the region.

The Congress leader further alleged that Modi’s engagement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu comes at a time when the latter faces corruption charges and domestic political turbulence. According to Ramesh, sections of Israel’s opposition have raised objections linked to concerns over judicial independence.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Israel on February 25 for a two-day visit. During the trip, he is expected to address the Knesset and hold meetings with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog.
