Jammu, 16-02-2024 : The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government at the Centre, accusing it of betraying farmers and reneging on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurances made prior to the 2014 elections. The Congress reiterated its unwavering support for farmers and vowed to address their grievances upon assuming power. Expressing deep concern over the plight of protesting farmers and condemning the government’s heavy-handed tactics, the Congress criticized the use of drone attacks to quell peaceful demonstrations, portraying it as a hostile act against the nation’s “Anndatas” or providers of sustenance.
JKPCC President Vikar Rasool Wani, speaking at a press conference held at the PCC office, alongside senior party leaders Ravinder Sharma, Vinod Sharma, Narinder Gupta, TS Tony, and Narinder Sharma, highlighted the alarming situation unfolding in Haryana, where farmers faced brutal suppression by the police. The deployment of tear gas via drones and other aggressive measures drew sharp criticism from the Congress, questioning the necessity for such actions against peaceful protests.
Accusing the BJP and Prime Minister Modi of backtracking on their pre-election promises, the Congress pointed out Modi’s pledge in 2014 to implement the Minimum Support Price (MSP) based on the recommendations of the late MS Swaminathan. Despite recent honors bestowed upon Swaminathan by the BJP government, the Congress argued that genuine tribute would entail fulfilling his recommendations. The failure to deliver on promised legal guarantees for MSP, despite prolonged protests and reminders from the farming community, was underscored as a glaring betrayal by the Congress.
In contrast, the Congress reiterated its commitment to farmers, citing recent pledges made at the Ambikapur session in Chhattisgarh to enshrine MSP into law. This commitment, enshrined in the party’s resolution on Agriculture, signals the party’s dedication to prioritize farmers’ welfare upon assuming office after the 2024 General Elections.
Moreover, the Congress lambasted the Modi government for its failure to fulfill its promise of doubling farmers’ income by 2022, highlighting a worsening economic situation for farmers during Modi’s tenure. Rising inflation, escalating fuel prices, and increased instances of farmer suicides were cited as evidence of the government’s failure to address agricultural concerns effectively.
