Congress President Kharge Calls on J&K Voters to Shape Future, Reflect on Statehood Loss

Kharge Urges J&K Voters to Remember Who Downgraded Their State to UT in Crucial Elections

NEW DELHI, Sept 18: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday urged voters in Jammu and Kashmir to reflect on who is responsible for the “travesty” of downgrading their state to a Union Territory as they head to the polls. Kharge emphasized that the electorate is keen to reclaim their rights and embark on a new chapter of genuine development and the restoration of full statehood.

As the assembly elections commenced, marking the first such event since the abrogation of Article 370, 24 constituencies across seven districts of the Union Territory went to vote under heightened security.

In a statement on X, Kharge encouraged voters to exercise their democratic rights and participate in large numbers, stating, “As the first phase of voting begins, I urge everyone to make their voices heard and cast their votes.” He underscored the significance of each vote in shaping a future marked by peace, stability, justice, progress, and economic opportunity.

Kharge also appealed to first-time voters to engage actively in this pivotal election, declaring, “Your participation is crucial in driving the change we need.” He further reminded voters of the historical context, saying, “For the first time ever, a state was reduced to a Union Territory. When you cast your vote, remember who is responsible for this shift.”

The Congress President called for unity and a collective effort to build a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir, where every citizen’s voice is valued.

This election represents a historic moment as it is the first assembly election since Jammu and Kashmir was reconstituted as a Union Territory on August 5, 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370, which granted the region special status. The state was divided into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The first phase of the three-phase election process involves seven districts, split by the Pir Panjal mountain range, where voters are choosing representatives for 24 assembly segments. Over 23 lakh voters will decide the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 Independents, vying for seats across eight districts in Jammu and 16 in the Kashmir valley. Subsequent phases are scheduled for September 25 and October 1, with the results to be announced on October 8.
