Congress Questions ‘Vishwaguru’ Claim, Asks Why India Isn’t Pushing BRICS Initiative on West Asia Crisis

Opposition targets Centre for not leveraging upcoming summit for diplomatic intervention

NEW DELHI, March 23: The Indian National Congress on Monday criticised the Centre over its handling of the ongoing West Asia crisis, questioning why India has not advanced the upcoming BRICS+ Summit to spearhead a diplomatic initiative.

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh remarked that the “Vishwaguru” claim rings hollow if India does not utilise its leadership position to address pressing global conflicts.

Ramesh pointed out that India is set to host the next BRICS+ Summit later this year and argued that the platform could be used to coordinate a collective response to the escalating tensions in West Asia. He alleged that the government may be reluctant to take such a step to avoid straining ties with Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Congress also questioned the effectiveness of backchannel diplomacy, suggesting that phone conversations with global leaders may not yield substantial outcomes compared to structured multilateral engagements.

In recent days, the party has repeatedly attacked the government for not issuing a joint statement as BRICS chair and for its perceived silence on the conflict. It further accused the Centre of failing to use its diplomatic influence to push for de-escalation and a ceasefire.

The ongoing conflict has intensified over the past few weeks, with continued missile and drone exchanges across the region, raising concerns over wider instability and threats to key global energy routes.

India’s stance and diplomatic approach are expected to remain under scrutiny as the situation unfolds and preparations continue for the high profile BRICS+ Summit.
