Congress Targets BJP, Says Party Focused on Defections While Citizens Battle Rising Costs

Mallikarjun Kharge accuses the government of economic mismanagement, claiming soaring prices, unemployment and declining savings are deepening public distress.

NEW DELHI, June 20: The Congress on Saturday launched a fresh attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, alleging that rising inflation, shrinking household savings and increasing unemployment have placed immense financial pressure on ordinary citizens across the country.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that families are struggling to cope with the growing cost of living and accused the Centre of failing to address key economic challenges affecting millions of people.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Kharge argued that economic conditions have worsened due to what he described as poor management of the economy. He asserted that many households are witnessing a steady erosion of their savings as prices of essential goods and services continue to rise.

The Congress chief said inflation has become a major concern for consumers, pointing to increasing prices of food items and healthcare services. According to him, retail inflation has touched a multi-month high, while food inflation continues to impact household budgets, making daily necessities more expensive for families.

Kharge also highlighted the sharp rise in medical expenses, claiming that healthcare costs have become increasingly difficult for many citizens to bear. He argued that the combination of higher food prices and rising healthcare expenditure is putting additional strain on middle-class and lower-income households.

Expressing concern over the employment situation, the veteran Congress leader said young people are facing limited job opportunities despite growing aspirations. He alleged that unemployment remains a significant challenge and warned that frustration among the youth is increasing due to a lack of adequate employment prospects.

The Congress president further referred to the performance of the Indian currency and foreign investment trends, claiming that economic uncertainties are affecting investor confidence. He argued that the government should focus more on addressing issues related to economic growth, employment generation and price stability.

Taking a political swipe at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Kharge alleged that the BJP is more focused on attracting leaders from rival political parties than addressing the concerns of ordinary citizens. He remarked that while political activity remains intense, many people are struggling to afford basic necessities and manage household expenses.

The opposition party has repeatedly raised concerns over inflation and employment in recent months, making them central themes in its criticism of the government. Congress leaders have argued that economic issues affecting everyday life should receive greater attention from policymakers.

The BJP, however, has consistently defended its economic record, highlighting infrastructure development, welfare initiatives, growth indicators and measures aimed at supporting vulnerable sections of society. The ruling party has also maintained that India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world despite global economic uncertainties.

The latest exchange reflects the continuing political debate over the country’s economic direction, with inflation, employment and household finances expected to remain key issues in the months ahead.

As political parties sharpen their focus on economic matters, concerns surrounding rising prices, purchasing power and job creation are likely to feature prominently in public discourse and policy discussions across the country.
