Countdown to Electoral Verdict: Crucial State Assembly Polls Pose a Pivotal Test for Congress and BJP Ahead of 2024 General Elections

High Stakes: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana Await Electoral Verdict

02-12-2023 : In a pivotal electoral showdown ahead of the looming general elections, Sunday marked the culmination of the assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The fierce contest primarily revolves around the Congress, holding power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and the BJP, reigning in Madhya Pradesh. In Telangana, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) led by K. Chandrashekhar Rao aims for a triumphant third term. Exit polls, while varied, have suggested BJP’s lead in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, with Congress having an edge in Telangana and Chhattisgarh.

The election process, commencing with postal ballots, initiated at 8 am with strict security measures in place. Madhya Pradesh with 230 seats, Chhattisgarh with 90, Telangana with 119, and Rajasthan with 199 seats witnessed enthusiastic participation. Mizoram’s counting is scheduled for Monday.

Both major political parties anticipate a positive outcome, with the Congress eyeing gains in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, while the BJP seeks to regain control in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. The election results are crucial for shaping the narrative leading up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP, led by four-time Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, aspires to replicate its Gujarat success in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress, having secured Karnataka earlier in the year, is keen on victories in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, aiming to maintain its position in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

As the nation awaits the results, Union Minister Anurag Thakur, in Jaipur, expressed confidence in the BJP’s governance, anticipating a positive outcome. Congress leaders, on the other hand, proclaimed their victory in all four states.

Amidst speculations, reports surfaced about parties swiftly securing their winning candidates to prevent poaching. In Telangana, allegations arose about BRS attempting to approach Congress candidates. In anticipation of the results, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar denied reports of plans to bring winning Congress candidates to resorts in Karnataka.

In Madhya Pradesh, prominent figures including Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, his predecessor Kamal Nath, and Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Patel, and Faggan Singh Kulaste await the electorate’s decision. Rajasthan, with a history of alternating power between Congress and BJP, anticipates the outcome for 199 seats. In Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and BJP’s Raman Singh are among the key contestants.

As the counting unfolds, political leaders, party workers, and the nation at large are eager to discern the electoral landscape’s changing contours, anticipating the results’ far-reaching implications.
